In a nutshell, I came up with a solution for a co-worker, asked her some questions to check my thinking, and then proposed the solution to her.
We're bringing a person back on our books after maternity leave, and rather than just throw any old work at her, I suggested we give her an internal project which she could really put her mark on.
Before I did that though, I asked her what her strengths were, what she wanted to do, etc.
The project we wanted to give to her then flowed naturally from what she wanted to do.
It was a bit of a zen moment in management. She's excited and we're happy to have her back.
